Thomas French, a devoted husband, father, piano player extraordinaire, and meticulous plastic surgeon, had high hopes for his career and his family until he was diagnosed with ALS. He practiced plastic surgery and was an assistant professor for the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA. Thomas was enthusiastic about music, playing the piano, performing in light opera, and was part of the music and art community. He also enjoyed skiing, sailing, swimming, and diving. Thomas authored a chapter in the book, "Who's Right (Whose Right?): Seeking Answers and Dignity in the Debate Over the Right to Die", written with his eyes using a special computer. The title of the Chapter, Mind Games, is also the name of a recently released documentary film about Tom and his family which premiered in Woodstock, VT, only hours after his death. ALS is completely debilitating, ultimately causing one to live life on a ventilator, and in most cases leads to death. This disease was the French family’s “beast.”
