Tom Dendrinos

I’m teeing it up for the second straight year at ALS100, playing in honor of my grandfather, Jim Morgan, who just recently passed away from ALS after a 4+ year long battle with this terrible disease. While I watched his physical decline, he always remained his usual upbeat, positive, and jovial self. He was constantly surrounded by friends & family, laughing and telling old stories even up until his final days.

My grandfather was my best friend, role model, father figure, golf partner all embodied by one simple three letter word, Pop. He introduced me to the game of golf as a young boy where we’d spend hours together hitting golf balls in the backyard at Deep Creek Lake. As I grew older and developed my own passion for the game, we shared hundreds of rounds together and created memories I will truly cherish for the rest of my life.

Even in my earliest days, I can recall him always laughing, owning every room he ever walked into, and not being able to go anywhere without running into a friend. Traits I seldomly saw one of in any person, yet he somehow possessed them all. To me, he was the coolest guy in the world as I never have seen someone so comfortable in their own skin. He never took himself or life too seriously, and I don’t think he ever had a single bad day. The best parts of me, I stole directly from him.

My grandfather always told me the most important lesson in life is building and maintaining relationships, which he credits to all his success. ALS100 and the people involved embody just that and it’s the perfect way to pay tribute to my grandfather as well as so many others who have been affected by ALS.

I’m playing in honor of my dad, Jim Morgan, who has touched so many lives over his 86 remarkable years. He’s built an incredible legacy—first in the insurance business, where he formed countless friendships, and later through his generosity and tireless support for the dyslexic community. Jim’s love for golf is second to none: since the age of 12, he’s played hundreds of rounds each year, enjoyed the game on courses all over the globe, and created a lifetime of memories with friends and family.

Three years ago, my dad was diagnosed with ALS, a truly terrible disease that has slowly robbed him of physical abilities. It’s heartbreaking to watch someone so vibrant and full of life have to battle such a relentless illness. Yet, even as ALS has brought new challenges, his humor, signature storytelling, and gift for building relationships remain unchanged. He’s handled it all with a courage and grace that inspire everyone around him. As his son, I’m grateful for the lessons he’s taught me, the memories we’ve shared, and the example he’s set every step of the way. More than anything, I hope that through awareness and events like this, we can help find a cure for this devastating disease.
