Steven L. Bachman, age 62, of Shoreview, Minn., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 2, 2023. Survived by loving wife, Joann Pfeiffer; daughters, Nicole Gibas and Tamara Nascene; sons-in-law, Cole Gibas and Nick Nascene; grandchildren, Meadow and Haaken; parents, Ken and Delouris Bachman; sister, Rhonda and brother Randy (Ana); and a large, loving extended family.

Steve worked as a UNIX system administrator until he retired, but his job did not define him.  He was a man of boundless intellectual curiosity, an avid reader, and a gifted writer. His wit and sense of humor were legendary. Steve was especially talented at any word or trivia game, often playing in Scrabble tournaments or writing New York Times-level crossword puzzles. He delighted in birding, a hobby he shared with his wife and father, and was a musicophile and Minnesota Master Naturalist. Steve enjoyed playing basketball and was an avid Timberwolves and Lynx fan. He was also a skilled softball player, and enjoyed his years on the MCO team.

Beyond his innumerable talents and interests, Steve should be remembered for how much he loved his family. He was an exemplar of unconditional love to all who knew him, and his devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren was unyielding. Please remember his courage and fortitude. After his ALS diagnosis at age 50, he wasted no time pitying himself; rather, he expressed gratitude and acceptance, often saying, "If I die tomorrow, I have lived a longer and higher quality of life than most who have ever lived or will ever live on this planet." His perspective was such a gift to us. We invite you to carry this outlook forward in your own life, in Steve's honor.

A celebration of Steve will be held Tuesday, July 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Forgotten Star Brewery in Fridley, MN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve's memory to the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the ACLU, Great River Shakespeare Festival, or No Dog Left Behind. The family would like to thank Steve's PCA, Julie Buol, for the exceptionally compassionate and devoted care she gave Steve for many years.
