After receiving my diagnosis on Groundhog's Day in 2022, I felt disheartened and overwhelmed. Nonetheless, I quickly began to wonder how this altered my life. The uncertainty of the future remained unchanged, so I saw no reason to abandon my aspirations. I decided that ALS would now stand for "Adaptive Life Style," and I resolved to find a way to keep moving forward. My goal was to complete the 6 Star: All the world major marathons, having already finished 3 and with registrations for 2 more. Despite the challenges, I adapted to becoming a para athlete.
I pushed myself to walk the first 4 miles of the Boston Marathon, and just six months later, using my first wheelchair with only 2 weeks of experience, I successfully completed the London Marathon. As my journey unfolded, family and friends began to see me as an inspiration, which I initially struggled to comprehend. Eventually, I realized that the joy and determination I experienced during the arduous training and races motivated others to understand the power of perseverance despite hardships. They caught the same spirit that drove me forward.
Now, I aspire to use my achievements and dreams to encourage others to join the fight against ALS. This year, I've chosen the ALS Therapy Development Institute as the organization to rally more people around. I believe in their vital work to bring new therapies for treating this disease, and I truly appreciate their openness to the entire scientific community. Together, we can make a difference and create hope for a better future in the battle against ALS.
