My name is Randy Marx. I became interested in ALS and fund raising to help find a cure when my father was diagnosed with the disease in 1994. To say it was rough watching the disease destroy my dad would be a gross understatement. It was devastating.
When my father passed away in September of 1995, I wanted to do something more than make an annual donation to ALS. We were living in Baltimore, MD at the time and Cal Ripken was within a year of breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive game record. That year passed quickly and found us relocating to Richmond, VA. I still recall the chills I had the 2 nights I watched Cal Ripken tie and break Lou Gehrig's record. I can also remember the tears that I had for my dad. Something kept telling me that I needed to do more for ALS. I thought a golf event would be a great way to do something in memory of my dad and for ALS but I kept putting it off.
My family became involved with the regional chapter of ALS and started participating in the annual Walk to D'Feet ALS fund raiser in Richmond. Our team hasn't broke any records for donations but the number of people walking and donating grows each year. But I still wasn't satisfied that I was doing enough.
Being an avid golfer and an avid Tom Watson fan from the beginning of his professional career I was shocked when I heard of Bruce Edwards, his caddy, being struck with ALS. I would watch and listen to him on TV and the slur of his speech brought back memories of my dad and, of course, more tears. I now had another reason to follow Tom Watson. I was excited for his play on tour and equally saddened for his "Caddy for Life". It seemed like another sign for me to get more involved in helping to find a cure for ALS.
Lynn and I have become involved in the travel industry in 2004 and started an online travel site, WWW.TRAVEL4ALS.COM , in 2006. We are excited about the fund raising opportunity it provides. When travel is booked on the TRAVEL4ALS website, the commission that is paid by the travel vendors is donated to ALS TDI. It doesn't cost you anything to use this site and the prices are comparable to (hopefully better than) those other online travel sites that people are using. We would love for you to use this site for all your travel needs. Share it with family, friends, and businesses and help us "Turn Travel and Vacations Into ALS TDI Donations."
