Become a Fundraiser This site up has been set up in honor of Ernie Harbol. Ernie was diagnosed with ALS in August of 2006. He passed away 18 months later on January 6th, 2008. For those of you who don't know what ALS is:
"Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Over 30,000 people are currently afflicted with this non curable disease. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is between 18-24 months."
This disease slowly took away Ernie's ability to eat, to speak clearly, and was slowly taking away his ability to do the activities he loved; karate and Tai Chi.
Each year his wife and children run the Medved 5K Race to Cure ALS in his honor on Father's Day instead of sitting at home and moping about all day. Last year we were joined by members of his immediate family and by friends from the karate family at Faust's U.S.A. Karate in Fairport NY. We run under the name of Team Ernie and include a silly saying Ernie was known for. This year our motto is: "Running for those who can't. Just do it, Chicks dig scars!" If you knew him you probably heard him say that and received an offer to view one of his scars.
All donations to Team Ernie through this website go directly to ALS therapy Development Institute.
