In Greek mythology and ancient Greek culture, Odysseus is hero who endures great odds with his intelligence and bravery. Despite all challenges put on him by the gods, he overcomes all of it to get home to his family. We have chosen "Team Odysseus," because skydiving provides that great metaphor--overcoming personal limitations and embracing life. 

One of the most emotional challenges that patients face through their ALS disease progression is their personal relationships with themselves--their redefining of what it means to live fully. ALS takes away people's ability to move, create facial expressions, speak, and even breathe. How do you "live"? Who are you now without your animation? Through these years working with ALS patients, I’ve met many inspiring individuals who use their inner spark to cultivate an empowering love for life: just as the Greek hero, Odysseus, we're all traveling on our own hero's journey. With the wisdom from Odysseus in Homer's "The Odyssey," we can endure and overcome great odds on our journey bravely.

Celebrating life has been a redefining of self-expression. I hope ALS patients can be empowered to embrace their heroes’ journeys in the midst of life's challenges with joy, love, and community.
