Facing Adversity With Courage

My name is Brian Stanfield, and I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself.  In the fall of 2001 I began to wake up each morning with a numb right hand.  I was sure it was due to poor circulation or sleeping on it wrong.  Twelve months later I married Janine, my college sweetheart and the woman of my dreams.  Around the same time my hand started cramping and losing some dexterity.  Three months later it started getting weak.  I had hardly noticed that everything I used to do with my right hand I was now doing with my left.  After another few months of continued weakness I decided that whatever the problem was, it needed to be checked out.  I had no history of medical problems.  I was always healthy and in good shape, so I was sure it was nothing serious.  I was wrong.  June 19th 2003 would have been Lou Gehrig's 100th birthday.  It was also the day I was diagnosed with ALS.  I was twenty nine years old.  This disease can strike any one at any time.

I would like to thank my family and friends for all of their love and support.  We will beat this together.

ABOUT THIS PAGE

I formed this page in October 2003, four months after I was diagnosed with ALS.  After the initial shock of my diagnosis, I was even more surprised to learn about the lack of funding and research dedicated to ALS.  ALS has been around for more than 100 years, yet there is still no known cause or cure for the disease.  That being the case, I can honestly say that we are getting closer every day.  Why?  Because of the great team at ALS-TDI.  ALS-TDI is the first ever Nonprofit Biotechnology Company, breaking new ground in the field of ALS research and development.  They are a dedicated group, focused on a cure, giving hope to people like me.

Thanks for visiting my page.  Please sign the guestbook, and check back for future updates.  All donations generated through this fund are tax-deductible and go directly to ALS-TDI.

SAINT MAGAZINE - FEATURE ARTICLE– SUMMER 2008 – “Brian Stanfield really lives. The 1994 St. Gregory’s College graduate lives for blowing bubbles on the porch with his son, potty training his daughter, watching cartoons all day…even grocery store trips with his wife. Brian hasn’t always lived this way. Not long ago, he was focused on his career and breaking 80 on the golf course. But that was before June 19, 2003. It was on this day he was given a gift…perspective…..” (Click Here to Read the Entire Article)
