Become a FundraiserThis website was created in memory of Capt. Brad E Johanson who was diagnosed with ALS in July of 2009.
Brad was an incredible man he was a loving husband, father, son, grandfather, brother and an amazing military leader. He reached out to help just about anyone in need. He never looked the other way and when he saw that something needed to be done he was there to make it happen. He loved our nation, the Navy and was always ready to do what was right.
Brad had just retired from the Navy after being the Captain of the greatest warship in the world the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and was getting get ready to train to swim the English Channel and to hike the Pacific Northwest Trail with his wife when he was suddenly diagnosed with ALS. It was devastating news and changed our lives, we now had a new mission and that was to find out all that we could about ALS and to raise as much money that we could to fight this horrible disease.
We met some amazing people that had ALS such as Augie Neieto who influenced us to continue on and do everything that we can to help out in raising funds for research. Brad raised $10,000. in 2009 and then in 2010 at “Breakfast With Brad” in Bremerton WA. he raised another $12,000. for ALS through MDA. He never stopped thinking about ways to raise more for research so that others behind us would not have to go through what we did and that a cure would be found. With stem cell research going on it seems like we are close to finding a cure.
Brad had the bulbar onset of ALS and this seems to be a very swift moving disease because it effects the throat first(speech), then eating and breathing and of course the the muscles throughout the body are also effected simultaneously and finally the lungs and muscles around the lungs keeping him from being able to clear them which ultimately caused pneumonia which was fatal.
After his diagnosis he lived 15 months, we have lost a wonderful person, one who will never be forgotten. We will never forget his endless smile his warm hand shake and his incredible ability to get the job done. He had many gifts, one was to bring people together as a team not just a team but the best team possible, he could put personalities together that worked in perfect harmony.
He is greatly missed by all that knew him and especially by his family. His legacy will live on forever.
